A dog can be one of the best additions to a family that you can get. They are beneficial to your life in so many ways. They bring you, and your loved ones closer together, they give you unconditional love and support, they are great for your health- because a dog needs daily exercise. Owning a dog is rewarding on so many levels.
However, there are a great many considerations that you need to work through before you get a dog. They are a big commitment, and once you have one, you will need to care for it and do the best for it. They are living, breathing animals, but importantly, they are intelligent and sensitive. Your dog will have a strong emotional bond with you and your family. With this in mind, you need to do some research and get it right.
What Dog To Get
Dogs go into shelters for several reasons. It may be that their owner got sick and couldn’t look after them. The owner may have died or had to give the dog up because they were moving. Other dogs will have been taken away from the owner because of abuse. Dog shelters are always full of unwanted pets that need a loving home.
With that in mind, there is a strong case for getting your dog from a rescue center. They need homes more than dogs from breeders. And they need your love and support.
Picking A Breed
Getting the right breed is essential. You need to know that your pet will suit the lifestyle of your family. For example, some dogs will need to be taken on long walks a couple of times a day. While others, less so. Some dogs are better with kids than others. And if you have existing pets in your home, such as cats, you will need to get a breed that is generally good with them.
Getting Your Home Right
You’ll need to make sure that your home is set out well for your dog. If you want to make sure your dog doesn’t jump on furniture, decide from the start, as you will need to train them not to go on there.
Having an outdoor area for your dog to run around is important. However, you will need to make sure you have a suitable fence for your pets. You wouldn’t want them escaping or jumping into your neighbors garden.
Think about where your dog will sleep. You may want to buy a dog bed, or a crate to let them have their own safe space at nights.
Training Your Dog
You should look at enrolling your dog in some training classes. Use positive training which rewards your dog for good behavior as this is the nicest way to teach them new habits.
Using treats, you will be able to get your dog to react to specific commands. This can be very helpful when it comes to teaching them boundaries and how you want them to behave in your home and around your family.
